Author Panel at Asia Society NY: Stories of Heritage

Children's books help develop empathy when children read about and identify with characters dissimilar to themselves. Furthermore, it is equally important for children to see themselves in the books they read. Despite overwhelming research that reading diverse books are vital for fostering confidence and empathy in children, Asian American stories are still underpublished and underrepresented.

This event will explore the importance of highlighting Asian American voices in children's literature by engaging a panel of best-selling authors and advocates for diversity in children's books. Join Aram Kim, Hope Lim, Andrea Wang, and Raakhee Mirchandani (moderator) for an in-depth and thought-provoking conversation.

Workshop: Making Children's Books for BIPOC Creators with NYPL

Do you love children's books? Have you thought of writing or illustrating one but didn't know where to begin? Aram Kim returns with her popular beginner's workshop exclusively for BIPOC creators. Aram is an award-winning children's book author/illustrator of four books and also an art director at Macmillan Publishers. This one-hour workshop will be a starting point for new creators to learn the very basic process of picture book making and publishing resources. Come with lots of questions!

*Why BIPOC creators? The current children's book publishing industry needs more diverse voices and stories. This workshop will provide more resources to help more BIPOC creators to tell their stories and increase access to the publishing industry.

This event will take place over Google Meet. You must register with your email address in order to receive the link to participate. The link will be sent to you by email approximately one day before the program. You will need a device with audio and video and an internet connection to join.
