Multi-Week Online Course

If you are illustrating AND writing your own book, and wondering how to prepare your submission, this is the course for you. You will focus on the craft of writing and illustrating a picture book with an intense level of feedback from faculty Courtney Pippin-Mathur and special guests, Natasha Khan Kazi and Aram Kim. Participants who complete all assignments should be able to finish or revise a working dummy (mocked up book) in its entirety during the course, preparing for submission to editors, agents, or art directors.

• Live sessions (with closed captioning available) on Tuesdays

  • 7:30-9pm Eastern,  September 30 (to allow time for introductions)

  • 7:30 – 8:30pm Eastern (October 7, 14, 21, 28, and November 4)

• Recorded content and resources in the virtual classroom throughout the course

• Weekly assignments September 30 – October 28 (posted in the virtual classroom)

• 1:1 consultation which includes discussion on your work-in-progress, any problems that you are having, and any ideas that you’d like to try

• Optional written critique of your completed dummy following the course (for an additional cost)

SCBWI Virtual Summer Conference is held this year July 31st through August 3rd, filled with rich programs for all levels of pre-published and published authors and illustrators of children’s books. I will be teaching a session for published authors and illustrators on school visits. My session is held on August 1st, Friday, at 2:15 PM PST. The title is Crafting Engaging School Visits: A Beginner's Guide to Connecting with Young Readers with Aram Kim.

Annual online Mini Workshop from Highlights Foundation, From Pencil or Paint to Pixel is back! With Courtney Pippin Mathur as an instructor for two nights going over the basic digital illustration, I join in on the second night to talk about the publishing side with a presentation “Ten Tips for Submitting to an Art Director (tradition and/or digital).” The course is on 5/20 and 5/22, with me joining on 5/22. Held over zoom, the recording will be sent to students so that one doesn’t need to be in the live session.

School visits offer authors a fantastic opportunity to connect directly with young readers, promote their books, and encourage literacy and creativity in the next generation, all while supplementing their income. Yet school visits remain quite mysterious for many newly published authors. Developing effective school visit materials takes time and requires some trial and error as you learn about your audience. I am excited to join the 4th Annual Pan-Asian Lunar New Year festival on Sunday, Feb 2, 2025, at the Ebster Courtyard, Decatur, GA. The festival celebrate with our family & friends, featuring the diverse customs of: Vietnam, South Korea, China, Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines.

I will be at the author’s table signing the books from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, and will be reading a book for a storytime during this time. Join for fun, activities, and of course food! Ticketed events for adults ($10), and kids enter free! All proceeds beneft Asian American Voices for Education.

If you are in Queens, please join many authors, artists, and educators this Saturday (Dec 16) for a day full of story times, drawing workshops, panel discussions and performances in Forest Hills. Our local bookstore Kew and Willow will have a pop up store to carry books by participating authors and many others. I will read Let’s Go to Taekwondo around at 1:55pm, and will participate in Discussing the Diversity with Children panel at 11:30am.
